There
has been a unique new arrival at the Pembridge Stud in Pembrokeshire. The
four-week-old filly Pembridge Jamilia is the result
of covering a Cleveland Bay mare by a stallion of the rare Akhal-Teke breed
from Central Asia.
A former grade I racehorse with two ultra-long-distance rides on his CV, Atamekan comes
from breed dating back 3,000 years, while Jamilia's dam, Pembridge Jewels,
is a representative of Britain's oldest breed of horse.
Improvements to the Cleveland Bay in the 17th century were
made by using a stallion thought to be related to the Akhal-Teke, so the
cross was designed
as an exercise in linebreeding, where stallion and mare share a common ancestor.

The experiment was the brainchild of Kate Telford.
She and John Coleman run the Pembridge Stud, which has already produced
competition
horses such
as three-day eventer Pembridge Minstrel, also a promising sire.
Two fillies by Atamekan have also been born in Pembrokeshire to Thoroughbred
mares. Pembridge Samarkand is the daughter of Pembridge Selena, while Abergwaun
Firecracker belongs to Noreen Vaughan, a former producer of show hacks and
hunters, including an RIHS supreme champion, and joint-owner of former Grand
National winner Nicolaus Silver.
Mrs Vaughan is still breeding chasers and eventers, and Firecracker is
destined for a career on the racecourse.
"She's a little corker; very correct in movement and conformation and her
mother has a job to keep up!" she said.
