Geldy's Family and Horses Under Threat of Eviction

updated 19th September 2006

Since Geldy's imprisonment, members of his family have been subjected to constant threats and harassment. The family are greatly distressed at the latest order, which is to pull down his farm, evict his family and horses, and build a factory on their land. Latest news is below.

We have received copies of official letters refering to the eviction, which are available here.

19th September 2006 - Hearing with the Procurator-General

Geldy's family lost their appeal (below) to have the eviction order overturned, however they have an official letter stating that they must be found more land before the eviction can take place. What and where this land will be, as yet no-one knows. It is also not clear to us whether they will be compensated by way of funds to build more stables etc. But at least this should mean they cannot be evicted suddenly with nowhere to go.

Thank you very much to all who wrote letters asking for the matter to be reconsidered. The family have particularly asked us to thank all those who took the time and trouble to write. However, with the President's annual amnesty for prisoners due in early November, Geldy's family are asking everyone to please resist the temptation to write further letters in the hope that a period of quiet will allow President Niyazov to come to the decision to include Geldy in this year's release. We are all very aware that Geldy knows the ropes: when to speak and when be silent.

26th July 2006 - Water disconnected

While the family await the hearing by the General Procurator (below), news has come through to us that their water supply has been disconnected. To keep the ninety horses alive, water has now to be brought in by road.

14th July 2006 - Procurator to hold hearing

Recent news from Turkmenistan is that the Procurator will be holding a hearing into the eviction order. We do not know what line this hearing will take and so have prepared a letter for President Niazov which we ask you to please send or fax as soon as possible, so that it stands the best chance of arriving ahead of the hearing.

You can use one of three versions: one in Russian for male senders; one in Russian for female senders; and one in English should you prefer to send that. All three read as follows:

To: His Excellency President Saparmurat Turkmenbashy

YANARDAG’S BIRTHPLACE

Your Excellency,

As a lover of horses and an admirer of the Akhal-Teke horse, I am greatly concerned to hear about the forthcoming eviction of Geldy Kyarizov’s horses from “Akhal-Yurt” in the Shor district of Ashgabat, the home that they have occupied for more than twenty years, and the birthplace of Yanardag, famous symbol of Turkmenistan.

Your Excellency will understand, as a breeder of Akhal-Teke horses yourself, what it will mean to the breed if this bloodstock is lost or dispersed. I am sure that the Turkmen people would be devastated if such a thing were to be allowed to happen.

I know that Your Excellency will be distressed to learn of this possibility, which would be so damaging to the high reputation Turkmenistan has earned across the world for its horses. I implore you to rescind the order to take away the farm “Akhal-Yurt” from Mr. Kyarizov.

Yours sincerely,

(Now that the hearing has passed, letters to President Niyazov and the Procurator-General have been removed from the website)

Since Geldy's imprisonment his family have been subjected to constant threats and harassment (see elsewhere on the website). The family are greatly distressed at the latest threat, which is to pull down his farm, evict his family and horses, and build a factory on their land.

"Everything is awfull! Today the comission 35 people came to our horse farm. They insisted to take horses out and to destroy all stables. They went everywhere and they said that they do not need horses and that we must take our horses out.

The Committee of National Security* are very interested in it. They want not only our horses they want our life. The Minister of National Security is building the chocolade factory near our horse farm. Now he wants our territory too.

Please write everywhere where you can. Only you can protect us. Could you please write to our President and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and to your Embassy?

Please act as you acted when Geldy was arrested."

(* the KNB - successors to the KGB)

Geldy's stud represents his life’s work. It would be both a personal tragedy and a disaster to the Akhal-Teke breed if his horses were thrown out to starve - and starve they will, as horses starve daily in Turkmenistan - like the six of Geldy's that died of hunger and thirst at the National Stud while temporarily confiscated by the State.

There is no doubt that there is full intention to carry out this threat. Geldy's family are convinced that the immediate outcry when he was arrested saved him from a much longer sentence or even from "disappearing". Another such response might save his horses.

Latest news on the eviction order here.
