Amnesty International call for action

Amnesty International have just issued a call for action in support of Geldy through their Urgent Action network.

Please support the call. Further details here.

24th January 2007
Please write to your MP, MEP and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office

Geldy's family were told late last year that he had died under torture, but they have recently been told that they may take food and medicine for him to the Department for Execution of Punishment, which suggests that he is still alive, although they still have no confirmation of this or of where he may be being held.

Their stud farm is being dismantled, despite no alternative land having first been found, as was promised in writing.

Amnesty International are now taking up Geldy's case, marking him 'Urgent Action'.

We are asking that you please write to your MP, MEP and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, to bring his plight to their attention, and to ask them to determine from the Turkmen government whether Geldy is still alive.

You will find specimen letters here.

Further information on Amnesty International's involvement the latest situation for Geldy's family is available here at this website.

Geldy's family have sent their warmest wishes and grateful thanks for all the support offered so far.

3rd January 2007 - Please send cards to Geldy

Following the failure of President Niyazov to release Geldy in the autumn 2006 amnesty, firm news of Geldy has been lacking. As reported in October, it is believed that in September Geldy was moved from Chardzhou Prison to Ovadan Depe, the notorious prison for political dissidents. To make matters even worse, Geldy's family were later told by a single individual claiming to represent the KNB that Geldy had died under torture, but this remains unconfirmed.

Since the death of President Niyazov in December, the country has been in a period of flux and it is unclear who will be the next president and what the future will hold.

In the light of the recent call by Human Rights Watch for Turkmenistan to release their political dissidents, we are asking supporters to please write cards to Geldy. Even if he is still alive, he may not receive them but the authorities will see that interest in his case and calls for his release remain active.

Please send cards to:

Geldy Kyarizov,
C/O Ministry of Internal affairs,
Department of the execution of punishment: Novgorodskaya 10,
Ashgabat 744000,
Turkmenistan.

Thank you.

While we wait, you can still help Geldy and his family in the following ways:

  • Write letters to your MP etc. (please see top of this page)

  • Make a donation - Geldy's family are in need of financial support, and donations are urgently needed to maintain the welfare of his surviving horses.

  • Fundraising events - If you have ideas for further events or can help in any way, please e-mail . Thank you!

  • Support Geldy T-shirt - download a design to print onto your own T-shirt.

  • If you would like to write or send photos to Geldy in prison, or to his family, their addresses are available here.
